The extremely distinctive asymmetrical body makes it clear at first glance exactly where the Harley Benton WL‑20 belongs. This is a guitar built for heavier territory, starting with the solid tonewoods for both body and neck, paired with a set of powerful high‑gain humbuckers. Together, they deliver a wide tonal range, from razor‑sharp riffs through to smooth, singing lead sounds. Despite its very accessible price, no corners have been cut when it comes to the WL-20's hardware. A solid stop tailpiece bridge provides reliable tuning stability and sustain, while six die-cast tuners on the headstock ensure consistent and accurate tuning. Visually, the look is completed by classic dot inlays on the laurel fretboard, which, combined with the slim C-shaped neck profile, gives a comfortable and approachable playing feel – particularly well suited to players just starting out.
At its core, the Harley Benton WL‑20 features a body made of linden (sometimes called basswood), which is paired with a maple neck – great building blocks for a straight-up Metal guitar that still hangs comfortably on a strap despite its unique shape. The form still gives the guitarist's picking hand enough support for relaxed and controlled playing. The electronics follow a familiar and effective layout: The two high-gain humbuckers are controlled via a three-way selector switch, with the overall sound shaped using a shared volume and tone control. Naturally, the WL-20 feels most at home with overdriven and high-gain sounds, where it delivers plenty of punch and definition. That said, the clean tones also come across surprisingly well, offering a full and balanced character that really stands out in this price range.
For beginners especially, the Harley Benton WL‑20 offers a very appealing way to get into playing heavier guitar sounds, combining a low price with solid build quality and a striking visual design. It's an effective recipe: Easy playability blended with a focused, uncompromising sound that suits modern Rock and Metal styles. What stands out in particular is the level of craftsmanship, which only a few years ago would have been hard to imagine at this price point. It's the kind of quality that's starting to put real pressure on more established competitors. Add a cable and an amp, both available at equally accessible prices from Harley Benton, and everything's in place to get started properly, without ever having to worry about how much it all cost.
Since 1998, the Harley Benton brand has been catering for the needs of countless guitarists and bassists. In addition to an extensive range of stringed instruments, Thomann's in-house brand also offers a wide choice of amplifiers, speakers, effect pedals, and other accessories. In total, the range includes over 1,500 products. Built by established names in the industry, all Harley Benton products combine quality and reliability at attractive and affordable prices. The continuous expansion of the range ensures that Harley Benton always provides new, exciting, and innovative products that keep players perfectly in tune with the world of music, day after day.
In terms of sound, the Harley Benton WL‑20 can handle the entire spectrum of Hard Rock and Metal, with a playability that makes it ideal for Thrash Metal in particular. Whether it's smooth lead lines with the neck pickup to the fore, dynamic crunch tones with both pickups engaged, or tight, aggressive rhythms from the bridge humbucker, it's all easily within reach. At the same time, the pickups aren't just versatile: They'll impress even more experienced players with their low noise, clear definition, and a surprising amount of headroom. Even at higher gain levels, the sound remains open and articulate, rather than feeling overly compressed – so it retains clarity and presence when it matters most, without losing that all important bite.
