Classic looks, classic specifications, classic sound: The Harley Benton TE-52 NA is a typical T-style guitar whose special feature is its price-performance ratio. With an American ash body and, since the model’s 2021 facelift, a roasted maple neck and fingerboard, this guitar matches the characteristics of far more expensive models. Other features include high-quality single-coil pickups from Roswell and vintage-style hardware that sounds as authentic as it looks. 2024 has also seen an upgrade to the Harley Benton TE-52 NA Vintage Series: To improve intonation, the model now features compensated bridge saddles made from brass. All of these elements guarantee a great guitar sound, which you can enjoy even more when playing through the Mooer Hornet Combo included in this bundle. The compact 15-watt Hornet is the ideal guitar amp for practising at home or for smaller sessions, and boasts nine simulations of well-known amp models and a range of built-in effects, not to mention Bluetooth connectivity, and AUX input, and a headphone output.
The natural wood look of the ash body features an attractive grain and a high-gloss finish, while the neck sports a matt finish for increased playing comfort. Speaking of the neck: This features a glued-on maple fretboard and is particularly robust and resistant to warping, as the wood has been caramelised (a type of roasting). The design of the bridge allows both string-through-body and toploader stringing methods to be used. Circuitry has been kept very clean and simple: Volume control, tone control, and selector switch. This three-way switch allows the player to flip easily between the pickups, with the “humbucking” middle position suppressing interference. The machine heads have retained their authentic vintage design, and two string trees ensure that the top strings do not come unseated from the nut, even when struck hard. Together with the three effect types and nine amp model simulations provided by the Mooer Hornet Combo, the tonal options available are diverse, yet operation is intuitive and easy to pick up thanks to the clearly labelled selector knobs and 3-band EQ.
The Harley Benton TE-52 and Mooer Hornet bundle is primarily aimed at beginners who have a small budget but want to find their own sound. For this purpose, the Harley Benton TE-52 offers its characteristic direct, bright, and crisp sound, without sounding too thin. Used in conjunction with the versatile Hornet Combo, this puts a wide sound palette at your disposal, including clean, crunch, and Metal sounds. Select your favourites and further enhance them with effects such as chorus, delay, and reverb. These can then be stored as presets in the amplifier’s nine designated patches and recalled later, offering beginners a lot of flexibility when practising. As a bonus, Bluetooth connectivity makes it possible to play back recorded music and play along to it (for which the headphone jack can also be used).
Since 1998, the Harley Benton brand has been catering for the needs of numerous guitarists and bassists. In addition to an extensive range of stringed instruments, Thomann's house brand also offers a wide choice of amplifiers, speakers, effect pedals, and other accessories. In total, the range includes over 1,500 products. Built by established names in the industry, all Harley Benton products combine quality and reliability at attractive and affordable prices. The continuous expansion of the range ensures that Harley Benton always provides new, exciting, and innovative products that keep players perfectly in tune with the musical world, day after day.
Known for its simple design, the T-style guitar first appeared in the early 1950s and was the first of its kind, preceding even the Les Paul and other popular models. Don’t let this simplicity fool you, however. Thanks to its fixed bridge design and a three-way selector switch with a middle position, this flexible electric guitar can be used across many musical genres and is generally regarded as an indestructible workhorse – and you can be assured of just that with the Harley Benton TE-52 as well. A wide variety of sounds can be reproduced thanks to the amp simulations of its bundle partner, the Mooer Hornet Combo, whose own built-in modulation, delay, and reverb effects with tap function further expand the possibilities for crafting your sound. An easy-to-read tuner and the amp’s compact size are all the more reason to make the Hornet Combo your companion for practising within the comfort of your own four walls.
String-through vs. toploader
The bridge of the Harley Benton TE-52 allows strings to be changed by either pulling them through the body, which puts more pressure on the compensated saddles and increases sustain (the length of time the strings vibrate), or they can be pulled through the holes on the rear side, which makes string bending easier. The choice of methods means you can experiment over time and decide for yourself which you prefer. Many musicians combine both variants – string-through-body and toploader – to cater to their sound needs. There is no "wrong" method here and, more importantly, whichever variant you choose, your sound will not suffer.
Caramelised maple
Caramelising is one of a range of heat treatment methods that can be applied to wood. This method, which is a relatively recent development, is used in order to give new and/or alternative woods the same tonal characteristics as older, matured tone woods (some of which are now protected by conservation laws and can thus no longer be sold). The wood is placed in a special computer-controlled oven and dried to a pre-determined degree – in other words, its natural drying phase is artificially shortened. This process also increases the wood’s resistance to warping while also changing its visual appearance by darkening its colour and making the pattern of the grain more distinct.
