The Syncussion SY-1 from Behringer is a clone of the Pearl Syncussion, an analog Percussion synthesizer from 1979. The original was housed in a rectangular case in which the two identical channels were arranged one above the other instead of next to each other. In addition, the original was surrounded by a sturdy wooden frame, as was standard for many instruments of the time. By changing the form factor, Behringer was able to accommodate the Syncussion in the proven desktop housing, allowing it to be mounted in a 19" rack with and even installed as an 80HP module in the Eurorack modular system.
The Syncussion consists of two similarly constructed synthesizer channels, each of which can be played in unison and has six modes. Modes A-E consist of different one to two oscillator combinations, Mode F is a noise generator. Tune (pitch) Decay (VCA envelope), Width (filter cutoff), Sweep (pitch envelope) and LFO can be set for each part. The LFO affects the pitch and offers either a square or triangle waveform. In addition, a Sample & Hold function can be switched on to modulate the pitch, which generates a different voltage with each new trigger and thus provides even more varied sounds. Mode A is best suited for powerful kick drums and bassline-like sounds. Mode F is a specialist for analogue hi-hats, snares and rhythmic noise tails. Modes B-E deliver an enormous bandwidth of banging electro-zaps, FM-like, atonal sounds, piu, whoop, bells and everything else that could be mixed into a 909 in a techno context. If you like older releases by or will already be familiar with the sounds of syncussion.
Exactly, because back in 1979 the concept was to play the syncussion with trigger pads as an extension of the sound palette in the drum set-up. Behringer's adaptation is far more flexible. On the one hand, the Drum synthesizer can be triggered with trigger pads or a thanks to the adjustable sensitivity of the trigger inputs; on the other hand, it can also be triggered in the classic way with the trigger outputs of the Behringer drum computer , and respectively Roland TR-x0x / Din Sync RE-x0x. The Syncussion SY-1 offers two modes via MIDI and USB, giving you the choice between fixed notes without pitch control or an extended mode with pitch control of around five octaves.
